This guide is for adults 18 and over.
The first message is where most conversations die. People send "hey" and get nothing, or send something too much and get blocked. The good news is that a good opener is simple: be warm, be specific and be respectful. This guide shows how.
The formula
A strong first message has four parts, usually in two or three sentences.
- A greeting that shows you read the profile. Mention something specific.
- One thing about you. Short and friendly.
- A question. Something easy to answer.
- Respect. No pressure, no demands.
That is it. You do not need to be clever. You need to be real.
Examples for any member
- "Hi, I loved the line about terrible puns. I'm a fan too. What's the worst one you've ever heard?"
- "Hello, your profile made me smile, especially the part about long dinners. What's your favorite kind of food?"
- "Hi there, I noticed we both like hiking. Have you got a favorite trail near you?"
Examples for a man writing to a woman who likes to lead
- "Hi, I like how direct your profile is. I enjoy following and I'm honest about it. Tell me, what does a good week look like for you?"
- "Hello, I read that you value respect and communication. So do I. I'd love to hear what you look for in a partner."
- "Hi, your sense of humor came through in your profile. I'm curious what made you want to join. No pressure, just interested."
Examples for a woman writing to a man who likes to follow
- "Hi, I liked how honest your profile was. I'm someone who likes to lead. What are you hoping to find here?"
- "Hello, I noticed you said you take consent seriously. Me too. What does a good first conversation look like for you?"
- "Hi, your cooking story made me smile. I'm in charge of most plans in my life and I like it that way. How do you feel about that?"
When you share an interest like role reversal
Be honest, but do not rush into detail.
- "Hi, I saw we both mentioned role reversal. I'd love to chat about what that means to you, whenever you're comfortable."
- "Hello, I'm new to this and curious. Would you be happy to tell me a bit about what you enjoy?"
If you are new to this
Saying so is a strength. Honest curiosity is attractive.
- "Hi, I'll be upfront: I'm curious and fairly new. I'd like to learn at a gentle pace. Is that okay with you?"
What to avoid
- "Hey" or "hi" on its own. Easy to ignore.
- Copy-and-paste messages. People can tell.
- Compliments only about looks. Show you read the profile.
- Explicit content or photos you were not asked for. Never send these first.
- Demands or instructions. "You will..." is a fast way to be blocked.
- Requests for money, gifts or "tribute". A major red flag. See How to Spot Scams on Adult Dating Sites.
- Asking for personal details early. Address, workplace and phone number can wait.
- Pressure to move off the site. Take your time.
If they reply
- Keep it conversational. Ask follow-up questions and answer theirs.
- Move at their pace. Let them set the speed.
- Talk about boundaries before anything else. See Consent, Boundaries and Stop Signals.
- Ask before getting explicit, and be ready for a no.
- Meet when you both feel ready, in public first. See our safety tips.
If they do not reply
Not everyone will. It is rarely personal. People get a lot of messages, or are not looking right now. Do not send a second message to nag. If you want, send one friendly follow-up after a week, then let it go.
If you receive a message you do not like
You never owe a reply. You can ignore it, block the sender and report anything abusive.
Make your profile do half the work
A good opener is easier when your profile is strong. See profile tips for women who lead and profile tips for men who follow.
Frequently asked questions
What should I write in a first message?
Mention something from their profile, say one thing about yourself and ask an easy question. Keep it warm, specific and respectful.
How long should a first message be?
Two to four sentences. Long enough to show effort, short enough to answer easily.
Should I mention what I am into right away?
You can mention shared interests, but keep detail for later. Build rapport first and talk about limits before anything explicit.
Is it okay to send photos in a first message?
No. Never send explicit photos unasked. Wait until you both agree.
How long should I wait for a reply?
A few days. After a week with no answer, assume they are not interested and move on.
